Katie Birge to Lead Aggressive Plan for Bloomington Technology Partnership

Bloomington, Indiana (January 22, 2014) – The Bloomington Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) recently announced the hiring of Katie Birge as full-time Director for the Bloomington Technology Partnership (BTP), a collaborative initiative of the BEDC focused on  Bloomington’s growing high-tech economy.

“Supporting the BTP at this level shows how much our community is committed to growing our tech economy and assisting local technology employers,” expressed Ron Walker, President of the BEDC. “With help from the City of Bloomington and Indiana University the BTP has grown from twelve hours a week to a full-time effort with actively engaged tech leaders and committed public partners,” stated Walker.

Since the creation of the BTP, the Bloomington tech scene has seen the addition and expansion of firms such as Hanapin Marketing, WSO2, Cigital, and Blue Burro. Ms. Birge began working for the BTP at 12 hours per week in January 2012, while also working with Bloomington-based startup SproutBox.

“The Bloomington area’s tech sector continues to grow, and I am looking forward to dedicating more time and resources to this initiative,” said Birge. “2014 will be dedicated to expanding local tech businesses, offering more events and introducing a pilot program dedicated to teaching coding skills to our local workforce,” stated Birge.

Originally from Jasper, Indiana, Birge holds a B.A. in Communication and Classical Studies from DePauw University and a M.A. in Telecommunication from Indiana University. She brings a wealth of local tech sector experience from her previous position as Project Coordinator at GP Strategies Corporation and an internship with Bloomington-based startup SproutBox. Birge currently co-organizes Bloomington’s Verge startup meetups as well as The Combine, an annual three-day technology conference in Bloomington.
