BLOOMINGTON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE NEW WEBSITE DESIGNED TO AID BUSINESS SITE SELECTION website provides dynamic data and sophisticated mapping technologies to help expanding businesses

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Bloomington Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) has launched, enhancing and simplifying the process of attracting new employers to Bloomington and Monroe County, Indiana.

Using Geographic Information System (GIS) Software, the website provides immediate access to in-depth information that previously took weeks to research. Industry data suggest that over 97% of initial site selection screening is done online. The new website provides immediate access to critical business intelligence that decision makers need to make an investment decision, reducing research time from weeks to minutes.

“ goes far beyond a simple database of available sites and buildings. The portal provides dynamic mapping capabilities including the ability to view geographic ‘layers’ of information such as special economic development areas, including Tax Increment Finance districts and the City of Bloomington Urban Enterprise Zone,” said Ron Walker, BEDC President.

Visitors to the site can view available commercial properties in Monroe County, along with size, use, cost, and development incentives. The site also serves as a showcase for Monroe County’s two sites certified by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) as ‘Shovel Ready.’ For each property, corresponding demographic reports such as labor force, education levels, consumer spending, and population characteristics can be automatically generated.

The development of the website was made possible by funding assistance from the Indiana University Office of the Vice President for Engagement. “Among other things, our support of the new BEDC portal serves the broader interest of attracting new investment to Bloomington, which will only further strengthen the local economy and provide new employment opportunities for our students, graduates, and the citizens of our community,” said Bill Stephan, IU Vice President for Engagement.

The GIS-powered website is built upon Google Maps technology, and offers state-of-the-art site selection mapping capabilities. The new website is also integrated with GIS Planning’s national site selection search engine,, which allows visitors to conduct national searches of cities and commercial properties that match their unique criteria, and the IEDC’s state-wide portal,
